The park straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks previously known as:
– Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa
– Gemsbok National Park in Botswana
The total area of the park is 38,000 square kilometers, this is BIG, very very big and we will show you places that others may only dream of. Approximately three-quarters of the park lies in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa. Kgalagadi means “place of thirst.

Mabuasehube is situated on the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi National Park. The name means ‘red earth’, named after the red Kalahari sand.
Campsites in Mabuasehube are basic and it is important to make sure you have enough drinking water, cleaning, and showering water. Water is a commodity in the Kalahari and very important on these safaris. Please make sure you have enough fuel with you, as there are no filling stations within the park. There are also no shops, make sure you have enough food with you. It is advisable to travel in a group of 2 or more vehicles. Please make sure you have spare parts, tools, a sufficient medical aid kit, and mosquito repellent.
The attraction to Mabuasehube is the ‘road less traveled’ and after the rains have fallen the pans fill with water; which allows for an excellent wildlife and wilderness experience. The perfect trail to escape the popular Kgalagadi Transfrontier park and explore the wild side of the Kalahari.

Day 1 Nossob
Meet up at Kgalagadi Lodge from where we’ll depart after breakfast at 9:00 am from where we will proceed to Nossob, about 180km from Twee Rivieren for our first night. There is a small Sanparks shop and fuel station.

Day 2 Matopi
This campsite is situated halfway between Nossob and Mabua’s main gate. This site offers a single shade tree in the middle of an otherwise open site. There is a small pan to the west with a little pullout and viewpoint. This is the most isolated and remote campsite in Southern Africa with no other people other than us within a 100km plus radius around us. This site became famous when a leopard attacked a woman in her tent here a couple of years ago.

Days 3 – 7 Mabuasehube Mpayathutlwa 1
Today our magical adventure in Mabua begins. We all settle in at the edge of Mpayathutlwa 1. This is as good as it gets when it comes to campsites in Mabua. This is the one campsite everybody wants. We will spend the next 5 days in one of the wildest and most remote places in Southern Africa where we will be listening to the nightlife and maybe a few visits by the various cat species. The days will be spent taking pictures of the wildlife on the pan or doing a game drive in the park.
The area is renowned for its low-lying pans, where giant eland, springbok, gemsbok, and the famous Kalahari lions come to quench their thirst. We will be in an area where the game has free access to wilderness more than twice the size of the Kruger National Park. Except for the rustic vehicle tracks, there is nothing else man-made and, without light pollution, the heavenly night skies and solitude will take your breath away.
You will be free to do either game drives or just lie around in camp and rest – waiting for the wildlife to come to us while having a cold beer or braai.

We will leave the park for 2 days and make our way North to Kaa via Jacks Pan. This is as wild as it gets with no facilities or water. You need to be self-sufficient for the next 2 days. This is one of George’s fav places ever. Lion, hyena and wild dog if we are lucky.

Day 10 KAA
KAA covers the most northern section of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Towns located nearest to Kaa are Hukuntsi and Kang. There are a number of pans in this region that fill with water during the rainy season and their hard surface layer ensures that the water remains in the pans and is not immediately absorbed. These pans are of great importance to wildlife, which obtains valuable nutrients from the salts and the grasses of the pans. The park is famous for predators like the black-mane lions, gemsbok, and bat-eared foxes that can be seen hunting for insects. There is also an abundance of birdlife to be enjoyed.
