Magical Mabuasehube

Mabuasehube is situated in the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi National Park. The name means ‘red earth’, named after the red Kalahari sand.

Campsites in Mabuasehube are basic and it is important to make sure you have enough drinking water, cleaning and showering water. Water is a commodity in the Kalahari and very important on these safaris. Please make sure you have enough fuel with you, as there’s no filling stations within the park. There are also no shops, make sure you have enough food with you. It is advisable to travel in a group of 2 or more vehicles. Please make sure you have spare parts, tools, a sufficient medical aid kit and mosquito repellent.

The attraction to Mabuasehube is the ‘road less traveled’ and after the rains have fallen the pans fill with water and it allows for an excellent wildlife and wilderness experience. The perfect trail to escape the popular Kgalagadi Trans Frontier park and explore the wild side of the Kalahari.

Day 1: Cutline

Meet up at Zeerust at 7:00 am from where we will proceed to the Lobatse border post. The first night will be spent on the cutline to the Mabuasehube gate. We will braai and enjoy the African sunset and bush.

Day 2 – 6: Mabuasehube

Today our magical adventure through Mabua begins. We all settle in at the edge of one of the pans in Mabuasehube (Kgalagadi Trans Frontier Park). We will spend the next 5 nights in one of the wildest and most remote places in Southern Africa where we will be listening to the night life and maybe a few visits by the various cat species. The days will be spend taking pictures of the wild life on the pan or doing a game drive in the park. Our campsite is at Mpaya 01. By far the most popular site in Mabua. Pit toilet, shower with cold water – if there’s water.

The area is renowned for its low lying pans, where giant eland, springbok, gemsbok and the famous Kalahari lions come to quench their thirst. We will be in an area where the game has free access to wilderness more than twice the size of the Kruger National Park. Except for the rustic vehicle tracks, there is nothing else man-made and, without light pollution, the heavenly night skies and solitude will take your breath away.

You will be free to do either game drives or just lying around in camp and rest – waiting for the wildlife to come to us while having a cold beer or braai. We have one fire, one “kuier” at night. Each vehicle to take 5 bags of wood please.

Days 7 – 9: Jacks Pan

This pan is situated 40 km from Mabua main gate. This pan offers wonderful wildlife sightings from the comfort of your tent and we were entertained by a group of 4 Hyenas every night. The Lions came to greet us on our last day on the previous trip. We had wild dog encounters. No facilities available.

What do you need:

A good reliable, serviced 4-wheel drive vehicle or 4×2 with diff-lock if not towing,
Fuel range of app. 750km’s including extra fuel containers like long range tanks and jerry cans.
Vehicle registration papers or letter of consent from the financing institution.
Children must have a valid passport and an unabridged birth certificate and letter of consent if not accompanied by both parents.
Guests from non-SADC countries will need a Visa.
A passport that is valid for 3 months after our return to SA, valid drivers license and ID.
All camping equipment and cooking/braai accessories, all food and drinks. NO shops for 9 nights.
A ground tent is fine but no open-air camping allowed due to the fact that we camp in predator territory. Preferably a good canvas tent.
Fridge/Freezer or cooler boxes.
Last but not least – A good sense of humour and a positive outlook.

2 way radios will be supplied by ourselves.
